STATEMENT REGARDING VERDICT
IN KAISER FOUNDATION HOSPITALS V. PFIZER INC.

NEW YORK – A jury in the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals v. Pfizer Inc. case in United States District Court in the District of Massachusetts today found that Kaiser was entitled to recover monies it paid for Neurontin, a medicine manufactured by Pfizer.

Pfizer issued the following statement after the jury verdict:

“We are disappointed with the verdict and will pursue post-trial motions and an appeal. While the jury awarded the plaintiffs less than half of what they were seeking in damages, the verdict and the judge’s rulings are not consistent with the facts and the law. What the jurors heard in the courtroom is not what Kaiser is telling its patients. In fact, Kaiser itself continues to recommend Neurontin for the same uses they sought recovery for in this case. Kaiser’s own physicians and several of their expert witnesses prescribed Neurontin for their patients based on their sound medical judgment.”

Neurontin is an important FDA-approved medicine that physicians have prescribed to treat millions of patients safely and effectively. Neurontin has been widely studied for more than two decades and there is an extensive body of publicly available literature on its safety and its use.

Elisa’s Camino Walk for Epilepsy Ontario

August 18, 2011

In late April 2010, Elisa McFarlane, one of Epilepsy Ontario’s board members turned a long-time calling into a fundraising opportunity. She began a five-week long trek along the El Camino de Santiago to raise money and awareness for Epilepsy Ontario.

“I have given my 780-kilometre El Camino de Santiago walk a lot of thought over the years, but I just knew that this was the right time in my life to do it,” said McFarlane. “I heard the calling and somehow the time and financial means were made available. As I reflected on all the reasons I wanted to do it, one thing became clear to me, that this was also an opportunity to help others.”

McFarlane dedicated the walk to the thousands of people and their families across Ontario living with epilepsy and other seizure disorders. You can support her by making a donation to Epilepsy Ontario.

An oft-trodden road

Back in the Middle Ages, this route became a well worn path of cultural exchange between the Iberian peninsula (modern day Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar) and the rest of Europe. With 1,800 historical buildings to admire en route, the five-week trek showcases an evolution of art and architecture over hundreds of years.

For Christians, the Camino is a pilgrimage route unparalleled by any other in Europe (including those to Rome and Jerusalem). Tombs of apostles, churches housing relics, and cathedrals in their splendour are just a few of the iconic sites lining the road to Santiago.

The route

The Camino starts on the French side of the Pyrenees, the mountain range that divides France and Spain. McFarlane and her fellow pilgrims crossed over the mountains and continued across the north of Spain to the town of Santiago Compostela.

Special Diet Cancellation, Ontario

August 18, 2011

Information Picket at Human Rights Tribunal:

Friday, May 28, 2010
9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Outside Human Rights Tribunal offices
655 Bay St., Toronto

The Ontario government announced in March 2010, that it will cancel the Special Diet Allowance program, a welfare-based allowance provided to individuals on welfare with special dietary concerns. The program provided up to $250 a month to individuals with health concerns ranging from allergies, diabetes and high blood pressure.

On May 28th, the Human Rights Tribunal will hold a follow-up meeting concerning its February 2010 decision that found the Ontario government had discriminated against individuals with certain medical conditions by not providing them with a fair amount of special diet allowance. In response to the decision, Queen’s Park announced, in March, that it would cancel the Special Diet Allowance and replace it with a new program administered by the health ministry.

Members of the ODSP Action Coalition believe the cancellation of the special diet program will be detrimental for the health of thousands of people, including people with disabilities. Members of the ODSP Action Coalition will be holding an informational picket outside the Human Rights Tribunal this Friday, when a follow-up hearing related to the decision will be held. Toronto-area supporters of the Coalition and anyone concerned with the cancellation of the Special Diet Allowance program and welcome to join the peaceful picket and information session.
