Police Training Curriculum

This police training curriculum is a revised version of Epilepsy Toronto’s accredited law enforcement training program. Epilepsy Ontario updated this curriculum in collaboration with an advisory committee that included:

Sergeant Sean O’Brien, Toronto Police Service, Toronto Police College
Gregory Connolley, Inspector (retired) Ontario Provincial Police, Professor (retired), Fleming College
Jason Romyn, Constable, Toronto Police Service

Dr. Eduard Bercovici, MSc, MD, FRCP(C), CC
NS Diplomate (EEG)Director, Southern Ontario Epilepsy Clinic

Dr. Tadeau A. Fantaneanu MDCM, CSCN (EEG), FRCPC
Director, Adult epilepsy program and EEG laboratory, The Ottawa Hospital

Epilepsy Durham Region
Epilepsy Toronto

There are three parts to this curriculum:

  • A PowerPoint presentation (available in 2 lengths) with video clips integrated throughout
  • A Training Guide to leave behind after the presentation
  • A 15 minute video to leave behind after the presentation

The training guide and 15 minute video are work as a package, and should be left behind together.

The Training Guide and 15 minute video provide all of the information covered in the presentation. This can be useful for the police officers attending the presentation to use as review or for anyone who missed the presentation.

Community epilepsy agencies can connect with their local police services to offer this curriculum.

General Usage Guidelines

Epilepsy agencies are free to use this presentation when following these guidelines.

Replace the Epilepsy Ontario logo and website with your agency’s logo and website, then update the presenter name for each presentation. The date will update automatically

Do not replace or alter the advisory committee, video participants, created by and funded by credits and logos.

Do not change the template or content.

The slides includes important material in the notes as well as the content in the slides themselves.

How to use the notes on these slides

1.SCRIPT: This material will provide guidance on information you should provide during the presentation in addition the content of the slides.

2.BACKGROUND  INFORMATION: This material is to provide the presenter with information that will help with the presentation, but isn’t necessarily intended for the speaker to tell the group. It may be to help you understand the information you’re providing (e.g. how to pronounce MENS REA and what it means), guide discussions about procedure, or respond to potential questions or concerns from the audience (e.g. Can a taser really fatally injure someone with a VNS device?)

3.VIDEO NOTES: These notes will tell you where to download the video clips to embed in your presentation.

Video Clips on these slides

The video clips embedded in the PowerPoint slides are linked to YouTube. You will need internet access to view these clips. You can also download the videos (see “Embedded Video Clips” section below) and embed the video files themselves in the presentation. Please note that embedding the video files into the PowerPoint presentation increases the PowerPoint file size to 3/4 of a Gig. This is too large for us to upload to Dropbox with our other material, but it would fit on most memory sticks.

Download PowerPoint Presentations

You are free to use either the full or condensed version of the PowerPoint presentation. After creating the full presentation, we realized that there were too many slides to get through in a typical presentation time. We created the condensed presentation to cut down on the number of slides and remove a couple of the video clips. Much of the content from the deleted slides is integrated into the slide notes of the condensed version. The presentation should go faster with 2/3 of the slides, even if much of the material covered remains the same.

These clips are listed below in order of their appearance in the PowerPoint presentations.

Please do not distribute these video clips outside of the PowerPoint presentation. If you are going to share any video from this curriculum on its own, please share the 15 minute video available below.

Expand Training Guide SectionTraining Guide

The training guide includes the information from the slides and the script notes. It should be distributed along with the full 15 minute video after a presentation.

Like the Spark sheets, there is space on the cover page for each community epilepsy agency to insert their logo and contact information. You can do this electronically through a program like Adobe Acrobat or you can attach a sticker with this information on a hard copy of the training guide.

Download the Training Guide.
