Alert: Carnitor (L-carnitine) tablets – May 26

Carnitor (Levocarnitine or L-carnitine) tablets are currently unavailable. The problem is only occuring in Canada. Carnitor tablets are available in other countries.

A resolution is expected but could potentially take several months. The current estimate from the pharmaceutical company for this issue to be resolved is the FAll 2016.

Contact your healthcare provider if you, or your child, are currently taking Carnitor tablets.

Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals has provided the following information that you can share with your healthcare provider:     English     |     French

An oral solution is still available. Switching from tablets to the oral solution may be an option for some people who require carnitine supplementation. The oral solution contains sucrose and may not be compatible with other epilepsy treatments, such as dietary therapy.

Patients unable to tolerate CARNITOR Oral Solution may be eligible for access to the US labelled CARNITOR Tablets through Health Canada’s Special Access Program.

After May 27, 2016, physicians and hospitals may request special access to US labelled CARNITOR Tablets. See explanation in the document for healthcare providers (links above).
