Uses
A broad spectrum anticonvulsant, effective against partial seizures (including secondary generalized tonic-clonic) and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Somewhat effective against absence, myoclonic and tonic/atonic seizures. Good for multiple seizure types.
How to Use
Loading dose = 100 mg/d, maintenance dose = 100-600 mg/d, once or twice daily.
Side Effects
Side effects are normally transient and self-limited. Somnolence, dizziness, gastrointestinal upset (anorexia, nausea, diarrhea) or rash may occur.
Precautions
Slow titration may decrease the incidence of side effects.
Interactions
Blood levels decreased by phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine. Blood levels not changed by valproate, felbamate, gabapentin, lamotrigine, topiramate, tiagabine, levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine.
