If a patient is already using a baby alarm to detect audible activities in the bedroom and relay the sounds to a caregiver’s room, this procedure may work to supplement other monitors. It is also possible to reduce the invasion of privacy caused by such a system.
Combining the baby alarm with other systems can significantly widen the scope of monitoring to include:
1. Detection of various symptoms associated with an epileptic seizure such as the following:
- Body movement, spasms in bed
- Vocal sounds without invasion of privacy
- Cessation of breathing in bed
- Drooling or vomiting in bed
- Urination or heavy perspiration in bed
- Changes in respration rate
2. Wandering or confused residents
- Bed occupancy monitoring with bed-leaving alarm
- Floor pressure mat detection of wondering through specific areas
These procedures permit the use of monitors with a simple radio alarm relay that many already have at home. Although Aremco produces sophisticated “wireless” devices, they are currently only available in the U.K.
