KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Kid's on the Block is a troupe of life-sized puppets with and without disabilities designed to provide positive education. Most epilepsy chapters in Ontario use KOB to help school aged children in their communities to understand epilepsy and to dispel myths about epilepsy.

Last year, two Epilepsy Ontario Chapters (Epilepsy London & Area, and Epilepsy Simcoe County) introduced a new KOB script, Bicycle Safety. It has been very well received by their schools in their communities.

The reason for introducing this program was to teach children, younger or older, safety practices when riding a bicycle as well as how important it is to wear a bicycle helmet.

Preventing head injuries can prevent some incidence of epilepsy. Basic bicycle safety is taught and reinforced in this program. Special emphasis is given to the use of bicycle safety helmets and the misconceptions children have regarding their use. Selecting the proper size bicycle, avoiding bikes with hand brakes for younger riders, and safety on the road is also discussed. Important points are reinforced through a puppet review with the audience, as children participate in learning about this important topic.

If you would like to book a KOB performance for your child's school or if you are interested in being a volunteer puppeteer with the KOB program, please contact your local Epilepsy Ontario Chapter.

Epilepsy Simcoe County also performs the following four additional Kids on the Block scripts: Brian Has A Seizure (3 and 2 puppet formats), EEG, I Missed It and Band Together. All are performed by volunteers of the chapter. They also assist other groups and Epilepsy Chapters in training sessions for KOB puppeteers. Their volunteer puppet troupe has very few openings left for the school year ending June 1997. If you would like to book any of the above performances for your classroom or group and/or would like to be trained to become a volunteer puppeteer, please call your local chapter of Epilepsy Ontario.
