Fast Facts — Healthcare in Ontario
1897 – The Victoria Order of Nurses (VON) was founded. It has recently gone public with fears of going out of business, in part due to the privatization of homecare in Ontario.
2,538 – number of chronic care hospital beds which have been cut since 1994.
21,000 – approximate number of persons on waiting lists for long term care beds in Ontario.
15% – amount of funding increase given to for-profit long term care corporations by the province. Non-profits saw funding decline.
16,000 – estimated number of workers who lost jobs in the hospital sector from 1995 to 1999.
$20,000,000 – amount the Canadian federal government paid in damages to Ethyl Corporation after the company sued the government under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) for banning MMT, a controversial gasoline additive suspected of having neurotoxic properties. The government also withdrew the ban.
