Epilepsy Monitoring Systems and Alarms
Aremco provides a wide range of monitoring products that can be used to detect some of the different symptoms associated with seizures. Most of these are designed for use while in bed, but there are others available as well.
The most common type of seizure involves shaking spasms which can be detected by a specially designed movement sensor that is usually located under the mattress, beneath the thigh area. This is connected, in turn, to a controller which allows adjustments to be made to minimize false alarms that might be caused by regular movements. For short term normal movements in bed, a time delay setting needs to be adjusted according to regular sleep patterns and behaviors. Until this preset time is exceeded there will be no alarm initiated.
Vocal sounds can provide another means of detecting seizures. Vocal sounds are converted, by means of a microphone and controller to signals so that there is no invasion of privacy. To avoid false alarms it is possible to make adjustments for ambient sounds and different levels of vocal sounds.
If neither of these symptoms are likely to occur, shaking or vocalizations, a moisture sensitive sheet can be used to cover the bed pillow in order to detect saliva, or vomiting during a seizure. As well, an easy-to-use respiration monitor is available to indicate whether breathing ceases.
All or some of the sensors can be used in any combination through the same alarm circuit if so desired.
In order to assist potential users a questionnaire can be filled out so that the suppliers may suggest an appropriate system.
