Epilepsy Canada Awards Summer Students Fellowships

Epilepsy Canada, (EC), announced the winners of this summer's fellowship awards. Recipients are chosen by excellence of project as determined by the EC Scientific Council.

Ms. Arawn Therrien, Department of Reproductive Sciences, Toronto Hospital Research Institute, of the University of Toronto, was awarded $3,000 for the Epilepsy Canada, Hoechst Marion Roussel Student Fellowship. Ms. Therrien's project is entitled Steroidal Regulation of Gap Junction Expression in the Brain: Possible Role as a Potentiator of Epileptic Seizure Activity. Her preceptor is Dr. Neil J. MacLusky.

Mr. Julian Spears, Department of Medicine, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia was awarded $3,000 for the Epilepsy Canada - Beth Parker Student Fellowship. His project is Gabaergic Intranigral Grafts for Epilepsy. His preceptor is Dr. Ivar Mendez.

Ms. Jill C. McEachern, from the Department of Physiology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, won the Epilepsy Canada - Canadian National Studentship Award of $5,000 for Disturbance of Neurotransmitter Receptor Function in the Kindling Model of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Her preceptor is Dr. Chris Shaw.
