Employment Opportunities & the Public Service Commission of Canada
Persons with epilepsy who are interested in pursuing employment opportunities within the federal government might consider contacting the Public Service Commission of Canada.
The Public Service Commission of Canada (PSC) functions as the recruiting referral arm of the Government of Canada. It has offices throughout the country, regionally in every province and territory. Among its duties, the PSC advertises for suitable candidates from the Canadian public to apply for positions in the public service.
The PSC offers to the general public both a web site (predominantly scientific and professional positions) and its "Infotel" line (presenting primarily clerical positions).
The PSC aims to more effectively ensure that "qualified, job-ready persons with disabilities (hopefully) succeed in identifying and securing positions appropriate to their skills within federal departments." Michael Harper, of the PSC Central and Southern Ontario Region, explains that, under the umbrella of the federal government's employment equity programs, the public service is attempting to reflect the Canadian population. These programs have identified 4 employment groups: women in non-traditional roles, visible minorities, Aboriginal persons, and persons with disabilities. The PSC can help qualified persons with epilepsy in "marketing" themselves for opportunities within federal departments.
The PSC can also help departmental management and staff in concerns about accommodation and awareness training. [Chapters of Epilepsy Ontario can also contribute, among other services, "in-house" seminars presenting and discussing seizures and their consequences in context.]
Job-ready individuals with epilepsy who believe they have appropriate skills and may have been held back due to myths about epilepsy, and who might consider the federal government to be an employer of choice, are urged to contact Mr. Harper. (See below.) While the PSC cannot guarantee success, it certainly can help get to the door of an interview.
