Donations Increase, Volunteerism Decreases
On 17 August 2001, Statistics Canada released its second national survey, Caring Canadians, Involved Canadians: Highlights from the 2000 National Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating. A total of 14,724 Canadians 15 years of age or older were interviewed.
The following offers a snapshot of the fiscal year from 1 October 1999 to 30 September 2000.
Donations- About $5 billion was donated to charities and non-profit organizations.
This represents an increase of 6% when adjusted for inflation. - 91% of the population aged 15+ donated money or goods to charitable organizations.
- 82% of financial donations were from 25% of donors.
- Door-to-door canvassing yielded 20% fewer gifts than in 1997.
- Religious organizations received 49% of all financial donations.
Volunteerism- Volunteering is down:
6.5 million (27%) Canadians gave time, down from 7.5 million (31%) in 1997. - Volunteers gave an average of 162 hours per year,
up from an average of 149 hours per year in 1997. - 73% of total time was donated by only 25% of volunteers,
who gave an average of 471 hours per year. - 7% of volunteers were required to volunteer by their school, employer or government mandate.
