Care for Seniors
There are several programs in Ontario offering services to people who need help with daily activities and/or health needs. For more information about the following programs, ask your doctor for a referral, or contact the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) office in your area. Special services at home can be made available through the Ministry of Community and Social Services office in your area.
Elderly Persons' or Older Adults' CentresSocial, recreational and cultural events for seniors, daycare for seniors, and some respite programs for their caregivers are available at many centres run by non-profit groups or local governments. Contact your local Public Health office for information in your region.
Home Care, Homemaker & Nursing ServicesNumerous home care programs arrange for in-home services, both long and short term, depending on the senior's needs. Homemaker and nursing services programs hire homemakers to perform tasks that some seniors may not be able to perform anymore. Tasks might include preparing meals, grocery shopping, doing laundry, housekeeping, helping with clothing, among others. Contact the organizations in your region or your local Epilepsy Ontario Chapter for more information.
Community Care Access CentresThe Ontario Ministry of Health provides Community Care Access nurses who may perform some medical tasks, such as changing bandages and bathing. Contact the CCAC for a referral and for information about the caregiver support services available to you in your home.
Red CrossThe Red Cross provides a Homemaker Service program for seniors with fixed incomes.
Victoria Order of NursesThe VON provides home health care services and home support services. Contact their central office or visit their web site for information about services in your community.
Support programs will help seniors become emotionally stronger and much more motivated. Caregiving is done out of goodness of heart by many people who just want to help by lending a hand, giving a kind word, and offering their support.
