Bloorview Centre Celebrates Centenary
In response to their awareness of the need to provide a safe, caring environment for children with chronic illnesses and disabilities, a group of socially privileged, community-minded women met in Toronto in May 1899 to discuss the creation of a Home for Incurable Children. Many of them, previously involved with the establishment of the Hospital for Sick Children in 1875, were concerned about the lack of follow-up services for children leaving the acute care treatment of the hospital. In only 7 months, they had acquired a house and furnishings to care for 15 children, as well as the work of 5 physicians who deferred payment.
Now the largest children's rehabilitation facility in Ontario, Bloorview MacMillan Centre provides outpatient clinics, community outreach programs and highly specialized hospital care to more than 5,000 children annually. Bloorview was among the first centres in the province to administer the ketogenic diet to children with epilepsy.
Congratulations to everyone at the Bloorview MacMillan Centre as it enters its second century of service.
