Around the Province – Brampton
Carey Thompson
Epilepsy Brampton has been growing and changing in leaps and bounds over the last several years. With the assistance of Epilepsy Ontario – Epilepsy Brampton has seen resurgence in membership, community presence and activities.
While monthly support groups, medical forums, one-on-one counseling and special events have always been staples of the Brampton office we've launched a number of new initiatives recently. We're particularly proud of our Kids on the Block program (KOB) in partnership with Mayfield Secondary School. This program allows us to not only teach young children about seizures before they have a chance to learn any of the misconceptions that are so prevalent about this disorder – but also gives high school students an exciting and fun way to volunteer in our community. Last year we visited over 750 students and this year we have already seen over 800. In addition to the KOB Epilepsy Brampton also provides a summer day camp for children with seizures where we provide one-on-one support to allow them to experience all the fun of summer vacation.
We have recently received funding from the Ministry of Citizenship to help us recreate our employment resources program. This is intended to create new partnerships within the community, intensify our outreach programs and, of course, provide a valuable new resource to our ever growing client base.
Epilepsy Brampton is quickly approaching its 10th anniversary and we are planning an anniversary dinner in September with both a live and silent auction, and of course entertainment.
At each milestone Epilepsy Ontario has been there to offer both support and information. EO has been pivotal on many occasions offering to share their knowledge on a variety of topics based on years of comprehensive experience. We look forward to a continued relationship with EO and are grateful for their tireless efforts to aid us in our mission to serve those living with epilepsy and create a strong, sustainable chapter. Our provincial partner is an invaluable resource that Epilepsy Brampton is grateful to have the good fortune to utilize.
